Jamie possessed a deep perception of the needs of others, the gift to nurture curiosity, and the ability to make others feel better both intentionally and through osmosis. He imparted his love for literature and poetry, ingenuity, humor, and outdoor exploration to his peers and his community. He recognized the importance of giving, sharing time, and providing guidance through resourcefulness.

Who is Jamie Kanzler?

Jamie was tirelessly passionate about the things he did. He possessed a deep perception of the needs of others. He loved and wrote poetry, composed original music, made film and explored nature. He was really, really funny. Unwaveringly moral. He did not have one mean cell in his body.

Jamie passed away in September 2013 at the age of 24. An "old soul" from birth, he was extraordinarily sensitive and perceptive, which made his short life equally difficult and intensely meaningful. Vermont, New Orleans, and Scotland were very important places to Jamie. By establishing the Jamie Kanzler Memorial Fund at the Vermont Community Foundation, Jamie's family believes they have the best opportunity to share his essence through supporting organizations that help strengthen children's connections to the natural world through literature, outdoor experiences and the arts.

Causes we support

Jamie was always trying to find ways to help others. This fund supports a variety of projects that Jamie cared about in ways that remember his distinct style and colorful sense of humor. Click here to learn more about Jamie's causes.

inspired work

Jamie's energy and creativity is still  constantly inspiring friends from different points in his life. The Kesey Farm Project in Oregon is offering a week long workshop to celebrate poetry and titled their workshop September Spring. Jamie's friend, Kayla Ephros, organized the workshop. Click here to learn more about the week and the farm!

The Jamie Kanzler Bookplate Project encourages others to enjoy books like Jamie did. Participants place a piece of Jamie's art, in the form of a bookplate, within their favorite book or one of Jamie's favorite books and then place the book somewhere else for others to find.
